Are You Thinking About Tutoring?
Before the launch of i-75 CPA Review I taught over 5,000 CPA Exam tutoring sessions. By the time I retired from tutoring, I had a six-week waiting list, students were paying me $150 for a 50-minute private session. I don’t recall anyone ever asking for a refund, complaining about the price or being disappointed. Why? Value! Student expectations were being met or exceeded every time. How do you go about hiring a CPA Exam Tutor and what should your expectations be? There are three types of tutoring sessions for the CPA Exam. Type 1) A teaching session, a session to learn new concepts: The student would say, “today I want you to teach me Bonds for the FAR Exam.” For a Type 1 Session, You the CPA Candidate should email the tutor at least one day in advance, that you would like a specific teaching session and the tutor should acknowledge by email you back whether or not he or she can honor your request or perhaps might need a few days to prepare in order to help you. This communication between tutor and candidate is important in order to guarantee satisfaction. So a Type 1 Session is a Teaching Session. The second type of tutoring session is a session to practice detailed exam questions. In a session like this, you are hiring the tutor to show you the key points in each Sim or M/C question. Cover several topics, not necessarily a teaching session but sometimes a Type 2 reveal weaknesses, you could then schedule a Type 1 teaching session… The third type of session is to plan your study strategy and help to keep you on schedule. This type of tutoring session requires you to have a good understanding of your current responsibilities unrelated to studying and know your available study hours. Do you have a good support system at home or are you basically on your own? Always let the tutor know in advance what type of session you want to have. Never go into a tutoring session assuming that the tutor knows what you need. Not every tutor is perfect for all 3 types of tutoring sessions. Not every tutor is right for every student. Some tutors prefer teaching, others might like doing practice questions and not teaching. Ask for the type of session you want and be sure that the tutor is prepared to deliver what you are asking for. If not, the type of session that you want may have to wait until the tutor is better prepared, or you might have to find a different tutor. The goal is to get maximum value out of a tutor/tutoring session and to pass the exam.
